Stockholm Codex Aureus
Overview
A mid 8th century Gospel book from southern England, probably Canterbury, written in gold, silver and ink on alternating purple-dyed and plain leaves. An Old English inscription records that Ealdorman Alfred and his wife Werburh ransomed it from a Viking army with pure gold and gave it to Christ Church, Canterbury. It later travelled to Spain and was bought for the Swedish royal library in 1690.
