Overview

Written and illuminated around 700 by Eadfrith, bishop of Lindisfarne, in honor of St Cuthbert. Its extraordinary carpet pages and canon tables combine Celtic, Anglo-Saxon, and Mediterranean traditions. A 10th century interlinear Old English gloss is the earliest surviving English Bible text.
