St Cuthbert Gospel
Overview
A 7th century pocket gospel book of John found virtually intact in the coffin of St Cuthbert when his shrine was opened in 1104. Its original red leather binding survives, making it the oldest intact European book. Acquired by the British Library in 2012 after a major fundraising campaign.
