Pearl Manuscript
Overview
Cotton Nero A.x is the sole surviving copy of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, bound with three other poems, Pearl, Cleanness and Patience, usually credited to a single anonymous Pearl Poet. Written in a north west Midlands dialect of the late 14th century and copied around 1400, the small volume also contains a series of colored illustrations. It survived the 1731 Ashburnham House fire that damaged Sir Robert Cotton's library.
