Gospels of Otto III
Overview
Made around 1000 for the Holy Roman Emperor Otto III, one of the masterpieces of Ottonian book painting. A famous double page shows personifications of Roma, Gallia, Germania and Sclavinia bringing tribute to the enthroned emperor. Its jewelled cover frames a Byzantine ivory. It belongs to the group of Reichenau illuminated manuscripts inscribed on UNESCO's Memory of the World register.
