Ellesmere Chaucer
Overview
An early 15th century manuscript of Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, prized for its careful text and lavish decoration. Painted portraits of the pilgrims, including Chaucer himself, ride beside the openings of their tales. The scribe has been identified by some scholars as Adam Pinkhurst. Owned for centuries by the Egerton family, later Earls of Ellesmere, it was bought by Henry E. Huntington in 1917.
