Edwin Smith Papyrus
Overview
The oldest surviving surgical treatise, copied around 1600 BCE from a text perhaps a thousand years older. Its 48 cases describe head and torso injuries with examination, diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment in a rational tone rare in Egyptian medicine. Bought in Luxor in 1862 by the American dealer whose name it bears.
