Schefer Maqamat
Overview
A copy of al-Hariri's Maqamat written and illustrated by Yahya ibn Mahmud al-Wasiti in 1237, probably in Baghdad. Its nearly one hundred paintings follow the silver-tongued rogue Abu Zayd through caravans, mosques, libraries, slave markets and village scenes, making it a landmark of Arab painting before the Mongol conquest. It is named after the orientalist Charles Schefer, whose collection passed to the French national library.
