Codex Mendoza
Overview
An Aztec pictorial manuscript commissioned around 1541 for the Spanish viceroy, recording the tribute owed by conquered provinces and the social order of Tenochtitlan in vivid color with Spanish glosses. Seized by French pirates en route to Spain, it ended up in Oxford after decades in French collections.
