Herculaneum Papyri
Overview
Over 1,800 carbonized papyrus rolls from the Villa of the Papyri, buried by Vesuvius in 79 CE. Mostly works of the Epicurean philosopher Philodemus, they are the only library surviving from antiquity. Unrolled since the 1750s and now read with X-rays, they still yield new texts.
